So you want to make your own surf wax? Start here....
Making your own DIY surf wax is not only fun but also cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Lets walk you through the process of making your own surf wax at home with just a few simple ingredients.
What You'll Need:
- Beeswax: The primary ingredient in most DIY surf waxes. It's natural, eco-friendly, and provides a great grip on the board. You'll need about 200g.
- Coconut Oil: This helps soften the wax. Depending on your water temperature, you'll adjust how much to use. For warm water, use around 50g, and for cooler water, increase it to 80g.
- Tree Resin (Optional): Adding tree resin can increase the stickiness of the wax. Use about 50g if desired.
- Essential Oils (Optional): To give your surf wax a pleasant scent, you can add a few drops of essential oil. Some popular scents include lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Prepare Your Workspace
Get everything set up in a well-ventilated area, preferably near a stovetop. Line your workspace with newspaper or a cloth to prevent spills. Prepare a mold where you’ll pour your finished wax – you can use anything from silicone molds to simple muffin trays.
2. Melt the Beeswax
Place the beeswax in a double boiler (or a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water) and let it melt. This might take a few minutes, but ensure the heat stays low to avoid burning.
3. Add Coconut Oil
Once the beeswax is fully melted, slowly add the coconut oil. Stir gently to ensure everything mixes evenly. If you're using resin, add it at this point too, and continue stirring until it has fully melted into the mixture.
4. Add Essential Oils
(Optional) If you want a scented surf wax, add 3-5 drops of your chosen essential oils once the wax and oil have blended together. Stir thoroughly.
5. Pour into Molds
Carefully pour the mixture into your prepared molds. Let the wax cool for at least a couple of hours at room temperature or in the fridge to speed up the process.
6. Pop Out and Store
Once cooled, pop the wax out of the molds. Your homemade surf wax is now ready to use! Store it in a cool, dry place and it should last for months.
Tips for Customizing Your Wax:
- For Warm Water: Increase the amount of coconut oil to create a softer wax that grips well in hot conditions.
- For Cold Water: Use less coconut oil for a harder wax that won’t crumble in colder temperatures.
- Resin Mix: If you find the wax isn’t sticky enough, experiment with adding more tree resin.
Why Make Your Own Surf Wax?
- Eco-Friendly: Commercial surf wax often contains synthetic chemicals. By making your own, you're using natural ingredients that are biodegradable and better for the ocean.
- Customizable: You can tweak the recipe to suit the specific water temperature and conditions you surf in.
- Cost-Effective: Beeswax and coconut oil are relatively inexpensive, and a little goes a long way.
A small word of caution here! Results may vary , so always take some if the corporate surf wax stuff with you!
