Sometimes you just stumble across some little-known piece of history, and you wonder why you didn't know about it already! Kind of like Lords of Dog Town / Zephyr Skateboards but down under.
So I recently came across a brand called Papa Nui, and this led me to Surfa Sam. To my surprise, Surfa Sam was an icon of the Aussie 60s and 70s surf and skate scene. A wee bit of history below plus a link to their website if you want to pick up some vintage-inspired gear. Enjoy!
Founded in 1963, Surfa Sam holds the distinction of being Australia's oldest skateboard manufacturer. Renowned for their traditional hand-shaped "Sidewalk Surfers," the brand has seamlessly blended heritage craftsmanship with modern surf and skate culture.
A Legacy Reborn
After a period of dormancy, Surfa Sam experienced a revival under new leadership, committed to preserving the original spirit envisioned by founder Leo. This resurgence emphasizes quality products that echo the refined styles of the 1960s, ensuring that each skateboard and apparel piece reflects the brand's storied past.
Craftsmanship and Design
Surfa Sam's skateboards are celebrated for their meticulous hand-shaped designs, offering enthusiasts an authentic "Sidewalk Surfing" experience. Beyond skateboards, the brand curates a selection of clothing and accessories that pay homage to classic surf and skate aesthetics, appealing to both purists and newcomers alike.
