Wax On Wax Off

The humble bar of wax is the 'glue' that binds surfers to surfcraft.  So what is in a bar of surf wax and what are some good options for your alternative craft.

Surf wax is typically made from a combination of natural and synthetic materials. Here's a general overview of how surf wax is made:

Ingredients:

  • Paraffin Wax or Beeswax: The main base of surf wax is usually either paraffin wax, a petroleum-derived wax, or beeswax, a natural wax produced by bees.
  • Sticky Additives: To enhance the grip and tackiness of the wax, sticky additives are mixed in. These can include ingredients like rosin, tree sap, or other natural resins.
  • Fragrance (Optional): Some surf waxes include fragrances to provide a pleasant smell while surfing. Fragrance is usually added in the form of essential oils or synthetic fragrances.
  • Coloring (Optional): Coloring agents may be added to give the wax a distinctive color. This is primarily for aesthetics and doesn't affect the wax's performance.
  • Hardeners (Optional): Some waxes include hardeners to make the wax more suitable for warmer water temperatures. Hardeners can help prevent the wax from melting too quickly in high-temperature conditions.
